Honda EU2000i generator is smoking?

We at most bought a brand new EU2000i generator. We put a bottle of oil in it, filled it with gas and it seemed to be fine for several minutes. But then it started smelling like frazzle and then started blowing out a lot of smoke. Any idea what I'm missing?

we have 2 honda eu2000i generators, one is a colleague. there will be times when it will be used in rainy weather, any ideas on how to keep rain from getting into the wire connections while race outside?

i lately bought a Honda gas generator model eu2000i. will it harm the generator to run it in the rain?
No it won't maltreat it, as long as it's not sitting in water and the cord plug stays dry.
p.s. the electronics are weatherized/protected from moisture.
